Wombat Farm started in October of 1999 on
what used to be one of the largest dairy farms in Kentucky.
I had invested a lot of time and effort in restoring the farm and
decided it was time to put
some
type of
animal
on
it.
I
ruled
out
cows
and
horses
because
they are labor intensive, hard on the land and expensive when maintaining
fields and fencing.
A friend suggested llamas. The Kentucky State Fair had a llama
and alpaca exhibit that year. After looking at both the llama and
alpaca, I felt the alpaca was a much better investment. I originally
started out with 3 pregnant females. In December of 2002, I added
the newest member to the herd, Tamee. In 2004 we packed up the farm and moved 40 miles to Georgetown, KY ( our present location ). This is an experience I would not wish on my worst enemy. It included finding a place for 20 alpacas to live, supervising the house and barn construction and putting up 1 mile worth of fence.
I did not have a farming background, nor
did I have a large sum of money to start what is
now a very successful alpaca business. I began by financing three
top quality females and using a key belief that serves me still
today. When breeding or purchasing to increase our herd we strive
to choose an animal that excels in both fleece and form.
We have done
very well with this philosophy and both local and large breeders
have obtained some of our top crias.
We specialize in Suris and dabble in grey huacayas and offer a wide
variety of services such as boarding, financing, some
transportation and stud services. We look forward to meeting and
talking with you and hope you will build your success from ours.
